In a press conference held on Monday, April 21, 2025, the Lands Minister exposed a disturbing deal between Akonta Mining and illegal miners. According to the Minister, Akonta Mining sold concessions in the Aboi Forest Reserve to illegal miners for GHC 300,000 per concession.

The Minister further revealed that as part of the agreement, the illegal miners are required to pay weekly royalties of 250 grams of gold to Akonta Mining's collaborators. This raises concerns about the extent of the company's involvement in illegal mining activities.
